There’s something sketchy about Old Moses. The records indicate he may have had as many as 3 wives – possibly at the same time – and as many as 12 children. There are numerous and conflicting records. The information below seems to be agreed upon by most:

  • Before Nov. 4, 1722: arrived in the US
  • Nov 4, 1722: he joined the Dutch Reformed Church of Nesaminy, Pa.
  • Occupation: school master
  • His Last Will and Testament was written Mar 12, 1735 and probated Mar 16, 1735 in Newcastle Co., De.
  • MacGillebhain is White in Gaelic.

Glad to see I am not the only one trying to figure out conflicting records. I am a descendent of Moses White through his son Joseph White(DE?), then David(NC), then William(NC),then John Austin(GAorAL), then Green Berry(LA), then Joseph John(LA), and finally my grandmother Iva Lou White(LA). Just wanted to say thanks and keep up the good work, I appreciate it!

Not a problem! We have a certain fondness for ol’ Moses. He seems to have been a bit of a rebel 🙂

I have a copy of something from my Grandmothers papers from a White Cousin showing relationship to Moses White. If you would like I can mail you a copy.

Would love to see! More lines mean more clues!

  • Evan Stark says:

Moses is my 7th great grand uncle, and I’m a bit confused. Supposedly he was the son of General James White, but the dates for everything wouldn’t make sense for that. Has anyone else figured this out? Did Moses of a son named Moses who was the father of James White?

  • catkittycat says:

“Old Moses” White is my direct ancestor thru his son Joseph White who relocated to Anson County, NC. And I have to say–of all the family lines I have researched, this is the MOST CONFUSING and entangled line I have ever encountered. (For one thing, the records are lousy–also the Whites used the same given names over and over, causing endless mix-ups; no one can tell one Moses or Hugh or Joseph or whoever from all the OTHER Moses, Hughs, Josephs, etc.) I am very nearly ready to give up on this family–even tho I KNOW they are my ancestors!! 😦
